Free Tax Preparation Program

In collaboration with the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition and AARP, Baxter’s Marketplace offers a Free Tax Preparation Program to low-income families and individuals in Kent County. Thousands of volunteer hours make this service possible.

Since the inception of the tax program over 40 years ago, it has grown significantly, from a few hundred tax returns filed annually in its beginning years, to well over a thousand in recent years.

Since 2014 (Income Tax year 2013) Baxter’s site has processed more than 1,200 federal tax returns each year on average. This is thanks to the time that more than 25 volunteers kindly giving more than 3,500 hours of their time each tax season. During this period, close to $5 million was returned to community members!

Baxter completed the 2015 Income Tax year on Wednesday, April 15. Thank you to each person who volunteered their time to make this year a wonderful success!

Interested in volunteering?

If you have time availability (minimum of 4-5 hours/week from Feb-April), a basic comprehension of mathematics and a passion to serve, you could become a tax preparer at Baxter! Most of our volunteers are retired professionals who love to help folks in the local community with their tax preparation. Be warned, there’s rigorous training and it is a significant commitment of your time, but the reward of seeing millions of dollars poured back into our neighborhood’s families is unmatched!
