April 22, 2017 – 8:00am to 12:00pm | 935 Baxter St SE, Grand Rapids
Fix Up Day is Baxter Community Center’s annual “all hands on deck” service day. Staff, neighbors and friends of Baxter come together for a day of hard work, laughter and community as they join hands to work on a variety of projects inside and outside the Baxter building.
Each year, we are joined by more than 100 individuals with the same goal: make our community a better place. We kick-off at 8:00am on Saturday, April 22, 2017. As volunteers arrive they sign in and and pick a job for the day, on a first-come, first-serve basis (except for jobs requiring special skills and advance planning). Work happens from 8:00am to Noon, when we come together to share a meal. Some projects may extend into the afternoon, but most volunteers go home after enjoying lunch with new and old friends.
Everyone! Individuals as well as groups are encouraged to sign up. All you need is a willing heart and a positive attitude! Baxter provides all supplies and tools. We’ll also have water available throughout the day in addition to some coffee in the morning and lunch at noon. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes!
At Baxter we believe in the power of community. There’s something special in bringing everyone in the Baxter family together: staff, neighbors and volunteers working in sync to make Baxter an even more beautiful place!
At Fix Up Day, you can expect a friendly atmosphere and a variety of jobs. Most of them are assigned on a first-come, first serve basis starting at 8am. Some jobs (which often require planning and special skill) are planned in advance – you can check with Randy Posthuma, our Facility Manager, for these special opportunities which include advanced carpentry, pluming and electrical work. Take a look at some of the jobs available at this year’s Fix Up Day:
Trimming and beautifying shrubs, laying down wood chips, planting/removing trees and shrubs, raking leaves among other jobs.
Floors, walls, windows… and all your standard “Spring Cleaning” type of cleaning 🙂
Pulling weeds, spreading fertilizer, planting new flowers in the flower beds, trimming some smaller plants and other tasks.
Pylons, hand railings, retaining wall, some spot-painting, parking lot lines and other projects.
Most of these projects are arranged ahead of time and include building shelving, counter-tops, etc. We have a few large-ish projects waiting for groups who want to champion them!
Changing light bulbs and fluorescents, replacing light switches, cleaning light fixtures.
There’s a variety of special projects which need specialized skills. Please contact our Facility Manager, Randy Posthuma, for more information.
Fix Up Day expenses are paid through donations from individuals like you. Please consider submitting a financial donation to help offset the cost of tools, supplies and other expenses. Your giving is needed and appreciated!
